Types of cosmetic dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry includes tooth whitening, dental veneers, dental bridges, dental crown, dental implants, dental bonding, and inlays and Onlays.
Tooth whitening - it is a simple cleaning process where the yellowish layers and other stains are removed from the surface of the teeth. The whitening procedure can either be vital or non-vital whitening. Vital whitening involves hydrogen peroxide and laser rays that could bleach the tooth. Whereas non-vital whitening is applied if a tooth is discolored after root canal treatment. Non-vital whitening can be applied only if there are no living nerves inside that particular tooth.

Dental veneers - this helps to improve the color, position of the teeth, shape, and chipped teeth. Two types of dental veneers are porcelain and ceramic veneers. Porcelain veneers are thin, and custom made shells of tooth-colored material which are resistant to stains. Ceramic veneers are thin shells that cover the complete front of the teeth, where the shape and shade of the veneer are matched with the natural teeth.

Dental bridges - this helps to fill the gaps using abutment, which is a supporting artificial tooth. An abutment is made of gold, porcelain, or alloy and is supported by natural teeth or implants. Traditional bridges are made of ceramics or porcelain, which are blended with metal used for missing teeth. Maryland bridge is made of porcelain that is fused to metal or plastic gums or teeth bonded by either of it.

Dental crown - these are a tooth-shaped cap that can be placed over the tooth that helps to restore the shape, size, and strength of the teeth. The crowns enclose the visible portion of the tooth that lies above or at the gum line. A crown is usually made of metal, porcelain, or stainless steel.

Dental implants - Implants are usually placed on the jawbone where the tooth will be replaced. Dental implants are made of titanium and titanium alloys, which makes it durable, less weight, and biocompatible.

Dental bonding - tooth-colored resin material or durable plastic will be hardened and applied under a special light. This material will bond to the tooth, which helps to improve dental appearance.

Inlays and Onlays - these are indirect fillings made from gold or porcelain that fills the decayed or damaged teeth. When the material is bonded with the center of a tooth, it is inlays. When the filling includes one or more points of the tooth or covers the biting surface, it is an outlay. At times these dental fillings are used as an alternative for dental crowns.
